CHRONIC PAIN

Since chronic pain varies from person to person and everyone has different tolerance levels for pain, treatment for chronic pain needs to be individualized. While there are non-medicinal methods of addressing chronic pain– acupuncture, massage, meditation, physical or psycho- therapy– the most common form of treatment for chronic pain is for medical professionals to prescribe pain medications, such as opioids.

Opioids are addictive medications that carry the risk of many side effects:

  • Addiction
  • Breathing Problems
  • Confusion
  • Constipation
  • Drowsiness
  • Itching
  • Nausea
  • Overdose
  • Sexual Side Effects

In fact, a survey completed amongst individuals with chronic pain found that roughly 50% of the people reported an overall decrease in their general well-being and quality of life since taking opioids to address their pain symptoms.

Instead of taking addictive opioid medications to address these types of pain, research is showing promising results of using CBD to address the symptoms. When a person experiences chronic pain due to nerve damage or inflammation, the body’s nervous system or immune system is unbalanced. CBD prevents the body from absorbing something called anandamide, which is a compound known to be involved in regulating pain. Less anandamide being absorbed means that more of it is remaining in the bloodstream, allowing the body to use that excess anandamide to better regulate pain.

CBD is also thought to interact with receptors on the brain and in the immune system, which results in anti-inflammatory and painkilling effects that can help with pain management.

Chronic pain can be caused by injury or illness. Some of the most common types of chronic pain are:

  • Headache
  • Postsurgical pain
  • Post-trauma pain
  • Lower back pain
  • Cancer pain
  • Arthritis pain
  • Neurogenic pain (pain caused by nerve damage)
  • Psychogenic pain (pain that isn’t caused by disease, injury, or nerve damage)

.

Chronic pain is often accompanied by other health issues such as:

  • Fatigue
  • sleep disturbance
  • decreased appetite
  • mood changes
  • limited movement which can reduce flexibility, strength, and stamina.

According to the American Academy of Pain Medicine, more than 1.5 billion people around the world have chronic pain. It’s the most common cause of long-term disability in the United States, affecting about 100 million Americans.

It is estimated by the  American Academy of Pain Medicine that “more than 1.5 billion people around the world have chronic pain”1. Chronic pain is the most common reason over 100 million Americans are on long-term disability2.

The definition of chronic pain varies, however most commonly it is described as any pain that lasts longer than 3 months3. Most often, chronic pain stems from an injury or illness. For example, people who experience back sprains may have lingering, long-term pain that persists even after the sprain has healed. Cancer treatment is another contributor to individuals experiencing chronic pain, as the treatment takes a toll on their body. Since physical pain is known to be connected to emotional pain, chronic pain can cause frustration, anger, anxiety, isolation, poor sleep, and other health risks4. This overall impact on a person’s mood, relationships, and general quality of life makes chronic pain a serious disability.
