CBD and its effects on the body is often misunderstood because of it relation to another cannabinoid, tetrahydrocannabinol, (THC). CBD has an open ring with a hydroxyl and alkene group, while THC supports a closed ring with an ester group.
The difference in the atomic structure create dramatic and different effects on how the two cannabinoids interact with the endocannabinoid system’s receptors. Both CBD and THC interact with
the body’s endocanabinoid system in the cannabinoid receptors CB1 and CB2. THC binds with the CB1 and CB2 receptors with a higher affinity for CB1 receptors, while CBD had little affinity for the two canabinoid receptors.
Additionally CBD has little affinity for the two cannabinoid receptors and serves more as an indirect antagonist of cannabinoid agonists. These chemical interactions allow THC to create that “high” sensation that CBD cannot achieve.
